Read first. Written down. Then fixed.

Appliance repair from a crew based on Folly Road: every machine gets a run-through with instruments before anyone names a part, every job gets one figure on a card before a tool comes out, and every address gets a page in the street book for next time.

What the crew works on

Six machines, one way of reading them.

Every page below sets out the order the run-through follows for that machine — the inexpensive, likely cause measured before the expensive, unlikely one is named — and what tends to fail on this side of the harbor.

Between the Wappoo and the Washout

What this side of the harbor does to a machine.

SALT AT THE CONNECTORSConnections before parts

Every kitchen on the map is within a mile of salt water, and it corrodes fan plugs, relay tabs and cord ends years before the parts behind them wear. Both ends get metered first; repairs go back sealed.

TWO KINDS OF WATERCity soft, island wells hard

Charleston Water writes a dosing card; a Johns Island well writes a scale card. The technician asks which before the racks come out, and the street book remembers.

VENTS EVERY WHICH WAYThe duct before the element

Wall hoods rusting since the seventies, attic runs to roof caps, ducts dropping through beach enclosures. Exhaust pressure is read before any heating part is blamed.

OLD HOUSES, NEW MACHINESThe circuit under load

Peninsula and Terrace kitchens run modern compressors on extended wiring. The outlet is metered as the machine starts before a board is suspected.

CHANGEOVER DAYSRentals on the calendar

Folly and peninsula rentals get visits in the check-out gap, a card the manager can forward, and a page per unit in the street book.

STORM BLINKSReset before replace

A control board frozen mid-routine by a squall looks dead and usually is not. Clearing it and checking the surge path come ahead of any board being quoted.

How a visit runs

Call, run-through, card, street book.

01
The call

The office takes your ZIP, your street, the machine and the symptom, sorts the fault, and rings back with a window that fits the day’s route.

02
The run-through

The technician runs the machine and reads it with instruments in a fixed order — the cheap, likely cause first — and treats the house as a suspect beside the machine.

03
The card

One written figure, left on the door of the machine, before a tool comes out. It does not grow. If a panel comes off and shows something the run-through could not reach, work halts and a fresh card is written.

04
The street book

Readings, parts, reasoning and a frank line on what the machine is now worth — filed by address, so the next visit picks up where this one left off.

The map

Twenty-five minutes from Folly Road, and not a mile past it.

Six areas, each with its own page and its own patterns. Beyond the line — Kiawah, Carolina Bay, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston — the office quotes a real window on request rather than promising a same-day one it cannot keep.

Asked on the call

Asked on the call, answered once.

How fast can someone reach a warm refrigerator on James Island?

Warm boxes take the first open technician, and the island is the crew’s home turf — most weekday calls before noon are seen the same day. Keep both doors shut until the van arrives; a closed box holds for hours.

It takes two cycles now. New element?

Not until the vent has a number on it. A healthy element behind a choked duct dries exactly like a dead one, and the pressure reading tells the difference in two minutes. Half the slow-dryer cards on this island list duct work and no parts.

Do you charge to come out and tell me it is not worth fixing?

The run-through is the visit, and the card is honest when the truthful line is retire. Nobody on the crew sells appliances, so that line has nothing behind it but arithmetic — and it comes with a straight word on what to buy instead.

What does a visit cost?

The run-through is $95 — the technician, the instruments, the fault found and the card written — and it is the whole bill if you decide to stop there. Go ahead and the card carries labor from a published from-rate for your machine plus the part on its own line. The from-rates are here.

Is the whole map really twenty-five minutes?

From Folly Road at Camp Road, yes: the island in eight, the beach in fourteen, the peninsula and inner West Ashley in eighteen, the Johns Island subdivisions in twenty-two. The office says plainly when an address is past the line.

The crew

A James Island company, run from the road it is named after.

Folly Road Appliance Repair is a small crew of technicians led by Cole, working out of an office on Folly Road at Camp Road. The office takes the calls and builds the day’s route; the technicians drive it. Every one of them runs the same run-through in the same order and writes the same card, so the number you get in Riverland Terrace is arrived at the same way as the one on Folly Beach.

Independent — no factory authorizations, and no pretence of any; every brand and every vintage; nothing for sale afterward; and the bill goes to the household, never to a warranty company. How the card works →
