The Wappoo Cut bridge puts inner West Ashley twelve minutes from the office: Avondale, Byrnes Downs, Wappoo Heights, South Windermere, Moreland, Ashley Hall Plantation, the streets either side of Savannah Highway out to the 526 interchange. Beyond the loop — Carolina Bay, Bees Ferry, the far end of Glenn McConnell — is past twenty-five minutes and handled on request, which the office says plainly.
Avondale, Byrnes Downs and Wappoo Heights were built in the forties and fifties around kitchens sized for a thirty-inch refrigerator, and now hold French-door boxes wedged into alcoves with no clearance behind them. A refrigerator that cannot breathe runs hot at the condenser and fails early at the fan and the relay; the run-through reads the clearance as well as the machine and the card says when the fix is an inch of air rather than a part.
Half the ranches inside the loop moved the laundry into a converted carport or a garage that became a den, and the dryer vent went through whatever wall was handy. Those runs get a pressure reading at the machine and a look at the hood before a heating part is blamed. The converted rooms are also damp — a terminal block gone green explains weak heat as often as a tired element does, and the power path is checked first.
South Windermere, Moreland and the streets off Folly Road on the West Ashley side have been renovating hard for a decade: induction slide-ins, panel-front dishwashers, counter-depth built-ins in kitchens that were just opened up.
