Which stage is failing — fill, wash, drain or spin — gets settled on the phone, and the technician recreates that stage with the water running. On the beach the first things checked are the receptacle and the cord, because ocean air corrodes a washer’s connections years before it wears its parts; a six-year-old front-loader that will not lock or trips the breaker almost always has a corroded connection somewhere between the wall and the control.
